I Choose You

“Let’s grow old together, with my heart in your hands and your hands holding mine. We’ll face the world together, ’cause you are the one I’ve been waiting to find.” – Let’s Grow Old Together by Lanaé Hale (off of her album ‘Back and Forth’, 2009)

Dear Future Husband,

I want you to know that you are not the best thing that has happened to me. I need you to understand that you are not my everything, you are not the love of my life, you are not my reason for waking up in the morning, you do not complete me, I do not need you, and you will never be enough for me.

I want you to know that the pressure is off to try to be those things and it is all because of Christ. Jesus is the Best Thing that has every happened to me. He is my everything, He is the love of my life, He is my reason for waking up in the morning, He completes me, I need Him above all else, and He is more than enough for me.

I also need you to know that with all of that said, I want you, I choose you. I want you be my side through the ups and downs of life. I want you to be the person I share my love of Jesus with. I want you to be the one with whom I share what Father is doing in my life. I want you to be the one who prays with me, praises with me, and prays for me. I want you to be the one who reminds me of and demonstrates Christ’s love to me when I am ‘unlovable’ (I promise you there will be those moments). I want you to be the one to point me back to the Word and to Truth when I am hurting, doubting, or wrong.  I want you to be the person I can always count on being there to do life with me. I want you to be the one I do ministry with. I want you to be the one I raise children with. I want you to be the one I laugh with, cry with, and sometimes even sit in silence with. I want you to be the one I learn more about grace and forgiveness with. I want you to be the one I grow old with. No, I do not need you, but I want you.

Furthermore, I want to be the one who is by your side through the ups and downs of life. I want to be the person with whom you can share your love of Jesus. I want to be the one to whom you tell what Father is doing in your life. I want to be the one who prayers with you, praises with you, and prays for you. I want to be the one who reminds you of and demonstrates Christ’s love to you when you are ‘unloveable’ (I cannot promise I will do this perfectly, but I want to try). I want to be the one to point you back to the Word and to Truth when you are hurting, doubting, or wrong. I want to be the person you can always count on to be there doing life with you. I want to be the one you do ministry with. I want to be the one you raise children with. I want to be the one you laugh with, cry with, and even sit in silence with. I want to be the one you learn more about grace and forgiveness with. I want to be the one that you grow old with. I do not want you to need me, but I want you to want me.

Most of all, I want us to grow closer to our Savior together, wanting more and more of Him each day.

(Author’s Note: I want to make it clear that  I do not see anything wrong with referring to your spouse as the love of your life or any of those other things. I am simply making my point that my love for a person should not come before my love for Christ. There are days when I am not perfect on this, but it is my heart’s desire to have Him have the number one place in my heart.)
